Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe.

Werner Herzog promised the then unknown director Errol Morris that if he ever completed his first film, ‘Gates of Heaven‘, about the pet cemetery business, he’d eat his shoe. Prompted by Herzog’s taunt, Morris completed the film. Keeping his word, Herzog, under the tutelage of chef and pioneer Alice Waters, boiled his shoe for five hours in a stock with herbs and garlic in the kitchen at Waters’ Chez Panisse in Berkley, CA. He ate the shoe in front of an audience at the premiere of ‘Gates of Heaven’. He didn’t eat the sole however, stating that one does not eat the bones of a chicken. ‘Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe‘ directed by Les Blank, 1980.
